Rubbish on our streets

or read the audio transcript: The rubbish bin needs to be covered with a lid because particularly in hot weather, germs will grow there and it will attract insects. And then there are rubbish like chairs thrown on the street maybe need to be collected ASAP.

Making space for everyone

or read the audio transcript: There's no shared road signs anywhere and the footpaths aren't wide enough for people to walk on. It's dangerous for people to walk on the road, delivery drivers and for bikes and cars.

An accessible community garden

or read the audio transcript: This is a community garden which I as a resident nearby with the city, we run a community garden and there's quite a few people participate. And is there anything special in the design? Yes, we made sure that it was, because we had a lot of people with wheelchairs, we made sure that it was wheelchair accessible so that these beds are the distance required so that wheelchairs can go around them.

Keeping footpaths clear

or read the audio transcript: Motorbike blocking footpath and open large bins. This is an example of domestic furniture rubbish being dumped on the footpaths and not cleared up for several days affecting pedestrian traffic.

Uneven footpaths create barriers

or read the audio transcript: The footpaths are uneven and very difficult for anybody with a disability or using a wheelchair to navigate through and the tree roots are a problem for that.

A need for secure housing

or read the audio transcript: Sadly, there's a lot of homeless people who spend time in Melbourne and we need more public housing for them.

Living with neighbourhood noise

or read the audio transcript: This photo is of a very, very noisy machine which means that people can't hear each other talking, people working or living up above would be affected by noise. There's a lot of construction going on everywhere in the CBD which is affecting people's quality of life.

Neighbourhood Photo Stories was originally developed as a physical activity as part of the ACTIVATE stage of City North: Empowering Senior Voices in Action.
Nearly 400 photographs and audio reflections were captured by older residents during the project's Discovery Walks.
This online activity brings together a selection of those photographs and reflections, offering another way to explore the neighbourhood through the experiences of older residents.
